7 Arrested in Upstate New York $7M Global Fraud Scheme: How “Operation Tidal Wave” Exposed a Complex Criminal Network

A major federal investigation known as Operation Tidal Wave has led to the arrest of seven individuals in upstate New York tied to a $7 million global fraud scheme. Authorities also seized 135 illegal firearms, making it one of the largest weapons recoveries in the region’s history.

This case highlights the growing intersection between financial cybercrime and organized criminal activity, raising serious concerns about how fraud networks operate on a global scale.

Overview of the $7 Million Fraud Scheme

Federal prosecutors allege that seven suspects from Albany and Troy orchestrated a sophisticated fraud and money laundering operation targeting victims worldwide.

The group is accused of laundering over $7.1 million obtained through deceptive financial practices involving businesses, individuals, and financial institutions.

Key Details:

  • 7 individuals charged in federal court
  • Over $7 million in fraudulent proceeds
  • Victims located across the globe
  • Scheme involved money laundering and financial deception

How the Fraud Worked (Business Email Compromise)

The fraud scheme relied heavily on a tactic known as Business Email Compromise (BEC)—a rapidly growing form of cybercrime.

The Process:

  1. Criminals impersonated legitimate companies via email
  2. Businesses received fake payment instructions
  3. Victims unknowingly wired money to fraudulent accounts
  4. Funds were quickly moved and laundered to avoid detection

To make the scam more convincing, the suspects created fake business identities using “Doing Business As” (DBA) registrations tied to real companies.

This allowed them to:

  • Open bank accounts under legitimate-sounding names
  • Trick financial institutions into approving transactions
  • Disguise the origin of stolen funds

Investigation and Arrests

The case began when a financial institution in Albany flagged suspicious banking activity and alerted authorities.

Law Enforcement Involvement:

  • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
  • IRS Criminal Investigation
  • Local and state law enforcement agencies

Search warrants executed in August 2025 led to the arrest of suspects and the uncovering of critical evidence.

135 Firearms Seized: A Shocking Discovery

During the investigation, authorities seized 135 firearms, including:

  • Machine guns
  • Weapons with obliterated serial numbers
  • High-capacity magazines

Officials described it as one of the largest firearm seizures in the Northern District of New York.

This discovery suggests the operation extended beyond financial fraud and may have posed a broader threat to public safety.

Legal Charges and Potential Penalties

The defendants face serious federal charges, including:

  • Money laundering conspiracy
    • Up to 20 years in prison
    • Fines up to $500,000
  • Firearm possession (in some cases)
    • Up to 15 additional years in prison

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
